Leikarringen “Heimhug” is the oldest existing Scandinavian folk dance group in the Chicago area. Founded in 1925, the group was one of three Norwegian “Leikarringens” or “ring dance” societies. The name “Heimhug” signified the “yearning for home” feeling that many Norwegian immigrants shared in the new land.

The group practices and performs Norwegian and other Scandinavian dances for a wide variety of audiences. Past performances include the Ravinia Summer Festival, Chicago area 17th of May, Leif Eriksson and Scandinavian Day festivals, Swedish Days in Paxton, Illinois, Nordic Fest in Decorah, Iowa, Syttende Mai Fest in Stoughton, Wisconsin, and the Scandinavian Days Festival in Story City, Iowa. The group has also performed for numerous Scandinavian organizations in the Chicago area and for Norwegian royalty during their visit to the United States. The authentic folk costumes worn by Leikarringen members originate from the Scandinavian countries. The majority of the costumes are Norwegian, representing the various regional districts in Norway. Leikarringen encourages anyone interested in learning Norwegian and other Scandinavian folk dances to become a member. Previous dance experience is not necessary. Leikarringen “Heimhug” practices on Wednesday evenings from September through June. New members are always welcome.

For further membership or performance information, call Janeen Devine at (773) 777-0836 or Barbra Kronborg-Mogil at (847) 823-7596.
