Photography by Diana Velasco: TWO NATIONALITIES presented at West Chicago City Museum and Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa
News courtesy of the West Chicago City Museum —
Artist Diana Velasco was born and raised in Denmark by a Spanish father and a Danish mother. Her photographic work touches on the subjects of identity and relationships. She has studied both anthropology and communication.
A two-part exhibit by Velasco is currently on display at the West Chicago City Museum, 132 Main Street, West Chicago, Illinois 60185. Part one is “1/2-Two Nationalities,” which consists of eight photographs of persons who hold dual citizenship with Denmark and another country. The second part is a series of photographs, which she has digitally manipulated, that relate to the family history of Velasco.
The closing reception will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Learn more about her spring photography project titled “Sense of Place,” involving the memories of the community around local landmarks.
Pick up a postcard during the closing reception and share your memories of a place in West Chicago, Illinois that means something to you! When she returns in May 2015 during Blooming Fest, she will photograph the places chosen by community members through their memory postcards.
The traveling portions of this exhibit and artist-in-residency project are in collaboration with the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa and the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, Washington. PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT THEN MOVES TO ELK HORN, IOWA

“Photography by Diana Velasco: Two Nationalities” to be presented at Museum of Danish America on November 28, 2014 – March 15, 2015
The exhibition “Photography by Diana Velasco: Two Nationalities” presents a series of photographs exploring individuals who grew up with parents of two different nationalities – as Velasco herself did, with a Danish mother and Spanish father. This poses a particular challenge of personal identity in Denmark, where dual citizenship is not permitted at this time. The exhibition is organized by the Denmark Immigration Museum outside of Copenhagen; in addition to the Museum of Danish America, this exhibit travels to the West Chicago Public Museum (West Chicago, IL) and the Nordic Heritage Museum (Seattle, WA).
Support for this exhibition and for an artist-in-residency with Diana Velasco comes from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Learn more about the Museum of Danish America at www.danishmuseum.org.
