Waltham, Massachusetts holds Danish Christmas Service on Sunday, December 22, 2013

Dansk Julegudstjeneste 2013 i Massachusetts

One of the loveliest holiday traditions in New England is Den Danske Julegudstjeneste.

Many years ago New England Danes had to travel the long way to the Danish Church in New York if they wanted to go to church for Christmas, and then the service would take place about a  week before Christmas, because the minister needed Christmas off (but that is a VERY LONG TIME AGO!)

The Danish Society of MA sought to correct this, so ever since we get together just before Juleaften to read Juleevangeliet (in Danish) and sing some of the old Danish Yule hymns and songs together in the festively decorated little Lutheran Church in Waltham.

True to tradition we will also this year be treated to a concert:  Carsten Kowalczyk will sing and Ninna Hessenbruch play the piano.   Sometimes we even have more performers, but that often is on a spontaneous basis.

After andagten [the service], we enjoy dansk julebag, julekringle* og te & kaffe, og så hygger vi os og ønsker hinaden GLÆDELIG JUL! [Danish cookies, “Danishes” and tea & coffee, and then we enjoy a jolly good time together and wish each other MERRY CHRISTMAS]…

OG  SÅ  ER  DET  JUL  IGEN!

DATE: Sunday, December 22nd, TIME: kl. 16:30 [4:30 PM] PLACE: First Lutheran Church, 6 Eddy Street, Waltham, MA.  It’s not very far, your GPS will tell you how to get there!

The hostess is Anne Dugan, former president of the Danish Society of Massachusetts.

P.S. Ulla har selv bagt kringlen i sit bageri!
