18th Annual Heilmann Scholarship at Cornell University Awarded to Simon Nielsen
Presentation at Copenhagen University’s ‘Translokation’ Ceremony –
The Flemming & Judy Heilmann Graduate Scholarship at Cornell University was awarded for the 18th straight year at a ceremony which took place at Copenhagen University on May 28th, 2014. The 18th Heilmann Scholar is stud. polit. Simon Nielsen, who receives the $20,000 award in support of one academic year at the Ivy League university, where he will further his studies in the fields of Finance, Financial Institutions and International Investment at post-graduate level.
Simon, a student at Oekonomisk Institut, scored a perfect grade 12 (out of possible 12) for his Bachelor’s Thesis on “The Fiscal Multiplier” theory, which has been used to promote Keynesian-type government spending to stimulate national economies as well as to support conservative arguments for tax reduction. This economic theory deals with the relationship between central government spending and changes in gross national product in a country. He scored a grade point average of 11.0 on the Danish 12-point-maximum scale, the equivalent of five A’s and one B in his most recent academic year.
Simon Nielsen’s high school years were spent at the renowned Herlufsholm Kostskole. He has since then held student assistant positions at Denmark’s Central Bank and the Department of Insurance & Pensions. He will be commencing his year at Cornell at the end of August this year.
“Judy and I are once again thrilled to see our award go to such a talented and committed Danish graduate, who will no doubt grasp every opportunity offered by the rich campus life and vigorous academics at Cornell,” commented Flemming Heilmann, “and Simon can be proud of the fact that he won the scholarship this year, when the applicant pool was the largest and strongest we have seen since the program’s inception in 1996.”
