#4 The Danish Pioneer's Countdown to Christmas 2014: A Walk for Charity in Denmark

Stroll for disadvantaged children at Danish Christmas Seal Homes set for this weekend –

Sunday, December 7, 2014 is the Christmas Seal March all over Denmark. There are 63 places across the country, where participants can walk five or ten kilometers and this special charity march supports children in the four Danish Christmas Seal Homes.

These four shelters are located in Skælskør, Ølsted, Kollund and Hobro.

This year is the 38th time that the Christmas Seal March has been organized, and for many individuals and families, it has become a tradition to get Christmas started with a brisk Christmas Seal March.

Last year, 17,639 paying participants enjoyed a fresh and lovely Christmas Seal March, and it meant a profit of about 1,000,000 Danish kroner to help the work at the Christmas Seal Homes.

It is also possible to run the route and the runners are sent off first at the starting point, although the runs aren’t timed.

Since the Christmas Seal March started in 1977, about 15.5 million Danish kroner have been collected for the Danish Christmas Seal Homes.

Christmas Seal Homes are run mainly by means of donations (getting 6% of public subsidy). So they are totally dependent on people supporting fundraising events like the Christmas Seal March.

Every year, 750 children between the ages of 7 to 14 get help at one of the four Christmas Seal Homes in Denmark. The children at the Christmas Seal Homes often come in with a poor quality of life, where bullying and low self-esteem take up much of their lives.

At many starting points, there is entertainment and the chance to buy something warm to drink. Here, it is Julemærkehjemmet in Skaelskoer where about 1,800 people gather each year to go on the Christmas Seal March. (Photo courtesy of the Christmas Seal March)

After a stay at the Christmas Seal Homes, the children often have a zest for life again.
