A Danish Success Story from EF Foundation – Meet the Wallis Family in Washington
The Wallis family from Washington opened their home last fall to Katrine from Denmark, an EF Foundation high school exchange student. Over the course of the school year, Katrine became more than just an exchange student, they gained a friend, ski instructor, big sister and daughter. Katrine had dreamed of studying abroad in the United States and loved everything about her exchange. She loved attending an American high school, making new friends, and especially loved her host family. It was a dream come true for her.
“I’ve grown so much and I’ve become so close with my host family here,” says Danish exchange student Katrine.
Experiencing an American prom was one of the highlights of Katrine’s exchange to the U.S.A.
“As her host mom, I was really excited that she wanted me to be a part of her prom as much as I wanted to be a part of it,” says host mom Pam. “She was simply beaming when she found her dress. And that is something I’ll remember forever. Watching her get ready for prom and watching how she has grown over this past year.”
Host dad Jeff says, “Words can’t express how truly proud of her I was.”
Host mom Pam added, “Katrine came into our home as a foreign exchange student but we ended up having this amazing girl come into our lives and she changed it forever. We knew that we would welcome Katrine and that she would be a part of our family for one year, but we did not realize just how close we would become with her. Instead of a year, we will have her in our family forever. She is a Wallis.”
EF Foundation brings 2,600 high school exchange students to the U.S. each year. EF is looking for host families and coordinators nationwide for students arriving January 2014 and fall 2014. Coordinators receive compensation and participate in national and international trips. Host families provide room, board and a loving environment. Students speak English and bring their own spending money.
