Across Oceans, Across Time ® . . . Morsingers Wanted!
Stories from the Genealogy Center at the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa-
Morsingers Wanted!! — The island of Mors lies in the Limfjord in far northwestern Jutland. Now part of Region Nordjylland, the island was formerly part of Thisted County (Amt). Its major town is Nykøbing, to which is usually appended the designation ‘Mors’ to distinguish it from the two other towns of the same name in other parts of Denmark. Today the island’s population is around 21,000, but historically a relatively large proportion of its population chose to emigrate and try their luck in America and elsewhere.
In March of 2016, the Morslands Historical Museum (http://www.museummors.dk) will be opening a special exhibition that will tell the story of those who over the years emigrated from this small part of Denmark to America.
The focus will be on the life experiences of the immigrants in their new homes, and how their descendants – one of whom was the late JFK biographer Theodore Sorensen – felt and feel about their island roots.
To this end, the Museum is interested in getting in touch with people who have letters, pictures, artifacts, diaries and the like relating to immigrants from the area who might be willing to share these with museum staff, or who may be an immigrant from the island themselves.
If readers fall into this group or know someone who does, the contact persons at the Morslands Historical Museum are Sanne.Christensen83@gmail.com or anders.have@museummors.dk. They would love to hear from you.
To date the Genealogy Center has identified nearly 100 immigrants from the various parishes on the island and would also like to have information on additional islanders. We can be contacted at librarian@danishmuseum.org or by calling 712.764.7009.
