Across Oceans, Across Time ® . . . Stories from the Museum of Danish America’s Wedding Apparel Collection in Iowa

Christine Jørgensen, the bride pictured here, was born in Lolland, Denmark on April 2, 1876 to parents Hans and Ane Jørgensen. She immigrated at the age of two with her parents to Grand Island, Nebraska, and the family farmed on a homestead outside of Dannebrog. Later, Christine attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska for one year.

On her 34th birthday, April 2, 1910, she married Peder Marius Pedersen, son of Christen and Mette Marie Pedersen. Born on June 24, 1871, Peder emigrated from Denmark at age 19, and worked his way through college. After Peder and Christine were married, they had three children. Peder was the town doctor for 40 years in Dannebrog, and had his medical practice in the parlor of their home, which Peder had built in 1912. Christine died on March 20, 1943, and Peder on August 2, 1944. Both are buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Dannebrog.

It is likely that Christine, being a dressmaker, made the cream-colored silk wedding dress she wore, with its netting details and small rosette decorations.

It came to the museum in late 2014 through her family, and is a beautiful addition to a wedding apparel collection that spans several decades.
