Annual Danish Capital of Texas Fun Run planned for Danevang

By Sandra F. Petersen, President, Danish Heritage Preservation Society –

The Danish Heritage Museum of Danevang, located approximately 70 miles southwest of Houston, has begun its second decade of sharing the history of Danes to visitors from around Texas and the world. It has been and continues to be the goal of the Danish Heritage Preservation Society (DHPS) through the Danish Heritage Museum to not only preserve the ethnic heritage of Danes but encourage people to see how all ethnicities have interacted to make the central Gulf Coast the vibrant area it is today. In 1990, the Texas state legislature designated Danevang as the Danish Capital of Texas, clearly identifying this community as unique, especially to the Danes in Texas.  The Annual Danish Capital of Texas Fun Run is one way we share our heritage with all. The Run will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015.  We will also honor Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s Birthday (April 16), a special day for all Danes.

The Danish community in Texas is strong, especially in the greater Houston area. Our goal for this year’s Fun Run is to increase the number of sponsors, volunteers and participants. We had excellent participation last year from throughout the Gulf Coast region and anticipate more than double the number of runners and walkers this year.  After the Run a special program for young people will be available at the Museum. They will be offered a guided tour with a scavenger hunt to better acquaint them with the history of Danes in Texas.

If you would like to support this worthy cause through advertising before and during the Fun Run, your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. This helps in the preservation of the history of Texas, especially that of early Danish settlers. Approximately 1,000 visitors come to the museum each year to learn about those valiant Danes who came to settle on the Texas prairie, struggling to grow cotton, a crop about which they knew nothing. Sharing the story of those Danes and their impact on the region for years to come cannot be accomplished without a large infusion of capital to allow expanding programs and growth in facilities.
