‘Around the World for New Year’s Eve’ celebrated in Chicago – including Denmark!

The Inaugural Chi-Town Rising New Year’s Eve Event Set for December 31, 2015 –
The Chicago Cultural Mile Association is honored to be partnering with Chi-Town Rising on the family-friendly portion of a mega-event designed to put Chicago at the top of the list of winter holiday destinations and showcase the city as a world-class venue for celebrating New Year’s Eve.

The main event will take place on Wacker between Michigan and Columbus and will feature live entertainment from 7pm to midnight. Chi-Town Rising has commissioned a dynamic multi-faceted star that will ascend 36 stories up the Hyatt Regency Chicago’s West Tower as the countdown begins, culminating in iconic imagery and an unprecedented fireworks show. NBC5 will be covering the event live from 11pm to midnight.

To complement the late-night festivities, the Chicago Cultural Mile Association is hosting the official Chi-Town Rising Family Countdown. This family-friendly event will take place from 3-6pm at Wrigley Square (corner of Michigan and Randolph) as well as the McCormick Tribune Skating Rink in Millennium Park. The theme is “Around the World for New Year’s Eve” and the program will feature a series of activity stations where kids can learn about New Year’s customs in other countries as well as live entertainment, kids’ karaoke and a 6 pm Family Countdown.

At midnight on December 31, Buddhist temples all over Japan ring their bells a total of 108 times to eliminate worldly desires. In our version, you only have to ring the bell 8 times!

Italians have a tradition of giving and eating round foods, particularly fruit, for good luck in the new year. Stop by the Italian station for a free clementine!

Brazilian New Year:
Brazilians have a New Year’s tradition of wearing wish ribbon bracelets. The wish ribbon is wrapped around the wrist, and tied with 3 knots, each knot symbolizing one wish. Once the Brazilian Wish Bracelet falls off the wrist on its own, it is believed that the 3 wishes will come true. Stop by the Brazil station for a wish bracelet!

Danish New Year:
In Denmark it’s customary to “jump” into the New Year by jumping off a chair a midnight. Stop by the Denmark station for a quick jump into 2016 off of our special flat chairs!

Colombian New Year:
In Colombia it is believed that if you take your suitcase out at midnight and walk around the block with it, you will be assured lots of traveling in the coming year. Stop by the Colombian station for a quick whirl around a mini track!

Romanian New Year:
In Romania, there is a tradition of tossing coins in a river on New Year’s morning. It is believed that this will bring wealth and prosperity in the new year. Stop by the Romanian station for a penny toss into our “river”!
