Christmas in Tivoli Extends Into The New Year in Copenhagen

Tourists from many nations will benefit from Tivoli’s extended Christmas season, now including the days surrounding New Year’s Eve, a popular time to see Copenhagen, Denmark for tourists.

The Tivoli Gardens boast thousands of lights and everything that Danes love at Christmas time.

Christmas in Tivoli will be open from November 15 – January 4, 2015.

Up to a million fairy lights in trees and on buildings will dazzle even the most phlegmatic I-do-not-take-part-in-this-nonsense visitor, and if you are really into Christmas, you will love the smell of Christmas foods, the many kilometers of  spruce garlands and the snugness of the little, decorative villages at Christmas in Tivoli. A new theme is being designed for the central square which will, as per tradition, present many interesting shops selling gift items, foods and traditional Christmas ornaments and candles.

A walk through Tivoli
Tivoli’s Nordic Christmas Village is just inside the main entrance gate. Smoke is coming out of the chimneys; Father Christmas’s reindeer are in their paddock; the shops sell knitwear, candles, mead and other Nordic specialities Pass through the Nimb’s dazzling white façade and then you are in Tivoli’s central square, where a new theme will greet you in 2014. While the theme is still a secret, a hint would be that Tivoli’s historic wooden roller coaster celebrated its hundredth anniversary this summer.

Moving on, you will have a view of this classic ride before you enter Quality Street with all its rides and games, among them the dizzying Aquila in the Tycho Brahe area of Tivoli. If you haven’t yet noticed Tivoli’s beautiful Christmas lighting, you will certainly see it once you have passed the Japanese Pagoda and reached the lake area. Here the weeping willows on the bank are dressed in fairy-lights to create that special ambience you associate with Tivoli: warm, nostalgic, romantic.

Before you sit down to enjoy a glass of gløgg in a restaurant, don’t miss a walk through the double row of shops along the central walkway. Smell the Christmassy spices and treats, feel the woolly scarves and admire the many Christmas ornaments. This bombardment of the senses is a vital aspect of Tivoli’s scenery.

Father Christmas
Father Christmas has parked his reindeer outside the Chinese-style Pantomime Theatre. In his cozy den inside the theatre, he greets children and listens to Christmas wishes every day right up until the big event. Last year, Father Christmas received visitors from at least 47 different countries. On your walk through Tivoli, look in the many shop windows to find nisser (elves or pixies) hard at work preparing for Christmas. Tivoli’s Pixie Band is an 8-piece band that performs in various spots throughout the gardens. If you have a bit of the nisse in you, buy a red pointy nisse hat; they come in many shapes and sizes and are for sale in many shops at Tivoli.

Royal designs for Christmas Classic
The Nutcracker opens on November 20 at the Tivoli Concert Hall. Tivoli’s artistic director, Peter Bo Bendixen, has choreographed this 2012 production of the Christmas classic, which has sets and costumes designed by Queen Margrethe of Denmark.  Performed by Tivoli Ballet Theatre the story has been adapted and now takes place in Copenhagen. Clara’s family has invited Copenhagen’s finest to celebrate Christmas with them. Hans Christian Andersen is among the guests and has taken Drosselmeier’s place in the ballet as the mysterious storyteller. When Clara falls asleep, her dream world is – of course – Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli Gardens is located at 3 Vesterbrogade,  DK 1630 Copenhagen V and is open for Christmas on November 15 – January 4, 2015. The hours are Sun. – Thurs. 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. and Fri. + Sat. 11 a.m. – midnight.
