COLORADO NEWS: 2015 Danish Sisterhood National Convention will be hosted by Ellen Lodge 21
By Chris Jensen Hix, Ellen Lodge 21 –
The Danish Sisterhood of America will hold its October 15 – 17, 2015 National Convention in Colorado, hosted by Ellen Lodge 21.
Ellen Lodge is an active lodge, and here is a recap of 2014 activities:
Our April meeting found us at the home of one of our newest members: Dorthe Brush. After our meeting, we got down to business and enjoyed a very tasty Danish meal of frikadeller and all the trimmings made by our wonderful chefs, Dorthe, and her co-host, Birgitte Jappe Ross.
May was our “heritage meeting”. Pia Edgar started the “Pin Point our Heritage” about two years ago. Each member has an opportunity to point out where their family originated from in Denmark and do a short presentation. A pin marks the spot on a map of Denmark.
We also had two presentations: Judy Mountfort and Dorthe Brush. Judy shared information on her maternal side of the family which also includes her two sisters, Glenda Heil and Arlene Morrow, her cousin Chris Jensen Hix, and niece Linda Brooks. The Petersen side of the family immigrated from Jutland and the Jensen’s immigrated from Drunningland. Both families homesteaded land for farming in Hamilton County, Nebraska.
Our second presentation was from Dorthe. Dorthe was born in Copenhagen. She shared mainly information from her maternal side of the family. Her grandparents met when they moved to Copenhagen: grandmother moved from Sweden and became a maid in Copenhagen. Her grandfather served in World War I. After the war he got a job at a market and met her grandmother when delivering fish to the villa where she was a maid. It was love at first sight. They were very involved in the resistance movement during World War II hiding Allied British paratroopers, her mother carrying resistance newspapers under the mattress in the baby carriage, the Gestapo and police arrested her uncle………She needs to write a book!!
This year instead of making crafts and selling them at the Norwegian Trondheim Craft Fair, we decided to have a garage sale for our fundraiser. Two days of hard labor, but we ended the two day event with a nice profit and a lot of items to donate to other needy causes. It’s always a great way to bond with our Sisters.
June was our annual picnic. As usual, we had too much food, but it was so good. The hosts supplied the chicken and everyone else brought a side dish. We do have some great cooks in our midst. It was a very pleasant afternoon with plenty of time to sit back and just enjoy the company of Sisters, friends and family.
Three of our Sisters (Judy Mountfort, Chris Hix and Theresa Sorensen) went on the Denmark tour hosted by the National Board. It was such a great trip. We met so many wonderful Danish Sisters and their families from all over, saw so many wonderful highlights of Denmark: Copenhagen, the Karen Blixen Museum, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Viborg, Ribe, Skagen, Kolding and so much more. Thanks to the National Board for making this trip a reality.
In August, Kathy Hinckley shared her lovely home for our meeting with Judy Mountfort as co-host. The main portion of our meeting was listening to Lizette Burtis, via the internet, giving the presentation on the midterm proposal regarding membership. After the presentation, we had time for a question and answer period. The NE/CO Sisterhood lodges did not meet this year for the District Convention. so our members really appreciated Lizette taking time out from her busy schedule to deliver the presentation at our monthly meeting.
After the meeting and a lunch of cold cuts, chocolate dipped strawberries and rhubarb cake, the National Convention Committee had their meeting. We have been working hard every month on all the facets of hosting the convention: the merchant mall, menu’s, workshops, tours, entertainment, decoration, sponsors… I really hope you plan on attending the 2015 Convention in Denver. We’ve ordered good weather and I know you will love the hotel and their staff. So, mark your calendar for October 15-17. You should really come a few days early or stay a few days after the Convention to enjoy Denver, the mountains, IKEA, Park Meadows, all the surrounding area.
