Danish Modern at The Danish Immigrant Museum
When you hear the words “Danish Modern,” what do you think of? Teak furniture? Sleek, minimalist design? Innovative solutions for 20th century living? Maybe you think of The Jetsons or – more recently – Mad Men? Maybe you think of chairs with descriptive names – Ants, Swans, Peacocks, Eggs? In the years after World War II, one of Denmark’s most successful exports was its design – seen in furniture, in housewares, in architecture, and many other fields. Americans provided a welcome market for Danish-designed goods, especially through the 1950s and 1960s. The style, craftsmanship, and quality of these pieces have stood the test of time. The Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa celebrates this story in 2013 with a feature exhibition called “Danish Modern: Design for Living”. Make plans to visit while this is on view, from April 6, 2013 through January 5, 2014. Visit www.danishmuseum.org
