Danish Sisterhood National Convention set for Colorado on October 15-17, 2015

Did you know that the Danish Sisterhood of America has 42 lodges throughout the United States and Canada – and that Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is an honorary member? These active individual lodges serve their local communities in a variety of ways – from regular meetings and heritage presentations to preparing Danish food, community projects & social activities. The National Danish Sisterhood offers scholarships, continuing education grants, youth language & camp grants – and members enjoy the “Danish Sisterhood News”.

In addition to local meetings and district conventions, a National Convention is held every four years. Next year, the Danish Sisterhood of America will hold its 26th National Convention at the Inverness Hotel and Resort in Englewood, Colorado on October 15 – 17, 2015. The local lodge in Denver, Ellen Lodge #21, will be the host. The last time Denver hosted was in 1946.

The Danish Sisterhood was organized in 1883 in Negaunee, Michigan by Christine Hemmingsen, a Danish immigrant. Inspired by the success of the Danish Brotherhood, Mrs. Hemmingsen founded the Danish Sisterhood of America and started Christine Lodge #1 in Negaunee on December 15, 1883. Early lodges were organized to provide social and financial aid to fellow Danes in a new land. Today, the mission of the Danish Sisterhood is to strengthen, maintain and preserve the Danish heritage and traditions for future generations to come.

Now is an exciting time to join the Danish Sisterhood. The Danish Sisterhood is open to everyone: women, men and children of Danish ancestry or anyone who is interested in Danish heritage and traditions.
