Denmark nominates ‘Millennium Development Goals (MDG)’ for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2015

Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation Mogens Jensen and eight of his predecessors have nominated the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), also known as the 2015 goals, for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The nine Danish ministers past and present agree on the key importance of these goals to global development over the past 15 years and that efforts to help the world’s poor deserve the honor of a nomination to receive the prestigious award in 2015 – the target year of the ambitious goals.

Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation Mogens Jensen says: “The 2015 goals have played a major and significant role in fostering development globally since they were established at the turn of the millennium. It marked the first time that world leaders joined together in such a declaration. The goals have contributed to very tangible results, such as a halving of global poverty and ensuring that 9 out of 10 children now attend school. They have brought together the world community around a vision of creating development, stability and better conditions in every corner of the world. They have contributed to the fight for a more peaceful world and therefore deserve to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I am delighted that Denmark’s former ministers for development have joined in a common front to wholeheartedly support the nomination.”

Efforts in connection with the 2015 goals were driven both by governments and civil societies, while UN development agencies also played a key role in their implementation. The goals united people across the globe in the fight for a better and more just world.

The 2015 goals are expected to be succeeded by new global sustainability goals during this year’s UN General Assembly in the autumn. Denmark finds it essential to establish ambitious goals for the next 15 years that can strengthen the focus on education, women’s rights, peace and security, and sustainable development with a focus on inclusive green growth, water, energy and climate.

The nomination submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Nobel Peace Prize, can be read in this letter (Click Here) signed by the following ministers responsible for development assistance: Poul Nielson (September 1994 – July 1999 and subsequently European Commissioner for Development), Anita Bay Bundegaard (December 2000 – November 2001), Per Stig Moller (November 2001 – August 2004), Bertel Haarder (August 2004 – February 2005), Ulla Tørnæs (February 2005 – February 2010), Søren Pind (February 2010 – October 2011), Christian Friis Bach (October 2011 – November 2013), Rasmus Helveg Petersen (November 2013 – February 2014) and Mogens Jensen (February 2014 – present). In their terms of office, all of these ministers have worked to drive the common agenda of promoting the 2015 goals as the central focal point of Danish development cooperation and global development efforts.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five awards established by Swede Alfred Nobel in his will. The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in December at Oslo City Hall, is considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious awards. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize was February 1, 2015.
