Enjoy Julmarknad December 6 & 7 in Minneapolis and Other Top Scandinavian Holiday Traditions at American Swedish Institute
A visit to the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis during the holiday season is one of the most magical Minnesota traditions! From the decked out historic Turnblad Mansion to the contemporary cool of the Nelson Cultural Center, families and visitors of all ages will all find something that delights, dazzles and creates a season of good jul and cheer.
Here are the top 12 experiences at the American Swedish Institute during “Winter Wonderland: A Nordic Christmas”, which runs now through January 11, 2015!
12) Great Tomte Find – Tomte, the Swedish Christmas Elf, has hidden throughout the 33-room Turnblad Mansion, can you find him? Search high and low on all four floors, find Tomte and get a holiday prize!
11) Lucia Concerts – Santa Lucia brings light to the darkest time of the year. The 75-member ASI Lucia Choir performs this favorite Swedish tradition in concerts on December 13 & 14.
10) Write in Elvish – Want to give a present to that special Tomte in your life? Try addressing your packages in an Elvish script! Visit the Wallenberg Library & Archives and try your hand at writing names in J.R.R. Tolkien’s alphabet and take some labels home to put on the packages under your tree.
9) Christmas by Design: The ASI Christmas Rooms. ASI’s iconic Christmas rooms celebrate the impact design has on the holiday traditions of the five Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark). This year, a sixth room, curated by Blu Dot, Forage Modern Workshop and The Foundry Home Goods, celebrates the impact of Scandinavian design on local Minnesota designers and artists.
8) Saturday Candy and Jul Shop – Give the gift of Scandinavian tradition and cool Nordic design from the ASI Jul Shop. Grab a scoop and pick from more than a dozen European candies to take home your custom mix of sweet treats from ASI’s Saturday Candy bins.
7) Enjoy a mug of glögg! A holiday favorite, glögg is served throughout the holiday season at ASI’s award winning café FIKA.
6) Enjoy ASI during Extended Hours. ASI opens early at 10 a.m. Tuesday – Saturday during the holiday season. ASI is open late for Winter Solstice Celebration (December 21), Lilla Julafton (Little Christmas Eve, December 23) and each After Work Wednesday (open until 8!) Get cozy around the bonfires and take a spin around the ASI kicksled course.
5) Savor the flavors of the holiday season in the exhibit, Nordic Inspired, American Made, a look at how Minnesota based Nordic Ware is helping families create new holiday memories. Join ASI for Nordic Table Demonstrations: Holiday Baking with Nordic Ware each Wednesday evening.
4) Making Traditions: Music in the Mansion and Sunday Slöjd. Drop by ASI each Sunday to hear a holiday concert by Nordic performing group and create a holiday craft in the Studio classroom to take home!
3) Kids at the Castle: Tiny Tomtes and Extraordinary Elves – Join ASI on Friday, December 21 from 11 a.m. – noon for playtime at the Castle and to learn all about the magical world of Tomte and his elf friends. Gather
2) Enjoy a holiday feast With all the fixings! Julbord, ASI’s winter smörgåsbord, features a full spread including Christmas ham, herring, meats, cheeses, rice pudding, meatballs and more. December 13, 20, 21.
1) Julmarknad – Shop ASI’s Christmas Market featuring 26 local artists. Enjoy musical performances, visits and story time with Tomte (Saturday) and Santa (Sunday), holiday craft activities and more! Julmarknad is held Saturday, December 6 (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and Sunday, December 7 (noon-5 p.m.) Admission (includes museum admission to the holiday exhibits and Christmas market): $10 adults, $5 ages 6–18, free for children 5 and under and ASI members. No special museum passes or discounts will be accepted on Julmarknad weekend.
