Flags to fly at half-staff in Denmark on February 16 and statement by Queen Margrethe

Flags to fly at half-staff following the attack in Copenhagen –

To commemorate the victims of the attack in Copenhagen, it has been decided that on Monday, February 16, 2015, flags will fly at half-staff on all Danish government buildings and government vessels. Danish Justice Minister Mette Frederiksen says: “February 14 and 15, 2015 are days we will never forget. To commemorate the victims and show respect for the wounded officers, the government has decided that Monday, February 16, 2015, the flags must fly at half-staff. At the same time it is an indication that we are united in our Democracy, our values and our community. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to those who have been affected by the cowardly attack and their relatives. We shall each day, today, tomorrow and in the future, fight for the free and open society. We must use our freedom of speech and our Democratic rights. We must not allow ourselves to break. ”

Statement by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark

In connection with the weekend’s events in Copenhagen, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has issued the following statement:  “It is with sadness that I learn the extent of the past days’ events. My thoughts are with the slain filmmaker and the young guard from the Jewish community, which became the target of the perpetrator’s actions. I send my deepest condolences to the relatives and the injured policemen. I want to thank the police and the authorities for their prompt and effective action. It is important that we in such a serious situation stand together and uphold the values on which Denmark is founded. ”

Additional Statement by Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt concerning the shooting incidents in Copenhagen

Following the events of the night, Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said: “It’s a very sad morning when we all think of the victims and their relatives. Two innocent people have lost their lives as a result of a cynical act of terror against Denmark. The day and through the night, the police have acted quickly and determinedly to ensure the safety of the citizens. I am happy and relieved that the police have disarmed the alleged perpetrator behind the two shootings. I will continue to encourage everyone to follow police instructions and be vigilant. I would like to express my deepest respect for the police and other authorities’ efforts. This applies especially to the wounded officers and their colleagues who selflessly put themselves in direct danger to protect us. The government is closely monitoring developments. No one should get away with attacking the open, free and Democratic Danish society. ”

STORY IN DANISH:

Dronningen:
