Happy Birthday to Hans Christian Andersen on April 2, 2014
On April 2, 2014, it is world-famous Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday. If you are in Andersen’s birthplace of Odense, Denmark that day, everybody is welcome to participate in a small ceremony in the memorial hall at 1 pm to 2 pm.
According to VisitDenmark, it is a tradition to celebrate the birthday in Hans Christian Andersen’s house, and during the ceremony the most important event is to award the scholarship “H. C. Andersens Hjælp” to a hard working schoolboy. The scholarship was instituted by the poet himself and has been awarded on this day since 1878.
At the same time, the “H. C. Andersen Foundation” awards a similar scholarship to a hard working schoolgirl according to the same conditions.
Also part of the tradition is the Hans Christian Andersen Parade and their shows in the garden in front of the museum.
