LIVE FROM DENMARK: Chicago and Washington, D.C. host viewing parties of Eurovision Song Contest from Copenhagen on May 10
Chicago Sister Cities International hosts 2014 Eurovision Song Contest live from Denmark
Popular Annual Song Contest Celebrates European Pop Music
Before American Idol, there was the Eurovision Song Contest. Since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has been one of Europe’s most popular television programs and one of television’s longest running music shows. After more than five decades featuring over 1,100 songs, the contest has become a modern classic with an estimated 125 million viewers watching each year, making it one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world. Featuring kitschy costumes and every style of music—love it or hate it—the contest represents a broad cross section of European culture unmatched by any other event.
Chicago Sister Cities International presents the Second Annual Eurovision Song Contest Viewing Party on Saturday, May 10, 2013 from 2–5:30 p.m. at the Kerryman (661 N. Clark Street) on the second floor space. Admission is free and open to the public. Cash bar and full menu will be available. It is free and open to the public of all ages. RSVP recommended, but not required; visit www.ChicagoSisterCities.com to RSVP.
The Eurovision Song Contest is being shown live from Copenhagen, Denmark. A special Eurovision Song Contest cocktail will be available for purchase. The audience is encouraged to bring flags and paraphernalia to represent the participating countries and will vote for their favorite contestant. Performers from 13 countries where Chicago has a sister city will be participating in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, including Athens, Greece; Birmingham, United Kingdom; Galway, Ireland; Gothenburg, Sweden; Hamburg, Germany; Kyiv, Ukraine; Lucerne, Switzerland; Milan, Italy; Moscow, Russia; Paris, France; Petach Tikva, Israel; Vilnius, Lithuania; and Warsaw, Poland.

Eurovision Song Contest
Each year, members of the European Broadcasting Union are invited to participate in the popular song contest. Participating countries select one singer—typically through televised competitions—to represent them in the contest. This year, musical artists from 37 countries are competing to be crowned the final winner. As 2013’s winner Emmelie de Forest is from Denmark, this year’s final competition is being held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Previous winners of the Eurovision Song Contest include popular artists such as Abba (Sweden), Katrina and The Waves (United Kingdom), Ruslana (Ukraine), Lena (Germany) and Celine Dion (Switzerland). For more information on the Eurovision Song Contest, visit www.Eurovision.tv.
