New Danish Exhibition and Free Admission to the Nordic Heritage Museum on a Milestone Syttende Mai or May 17, 2014
Syttende Mai, or the 17th of May, is the Norwegian Constitution Day, and each year Ballard, Washington hosts the largest Syttende Mai parade outside of Norway! This year marks two special anniversaries: 200 years of the Norwegian Constitution, and 125 years of the celebration in Seattle. In celebration, the Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, WA 98117, will present a full day of activities with free admission on Saturday, May 17, culminating with the inaugural Syttende Mai After-Party following the parade.
The day kicks off with the Ballard Street Scramble at 9:30 a.m., hosted by MerGeo. The Museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and kids and parents can enjoy the Norwegian-themed crafts set up throughout the Museum, including rosemaled paper plates, pop art trolls, and Norwegian flag postcards. Open-face sandwiches and Norwegian treats will be served in the Nordic Café with entertainment by Hugo’s Accordion Band, and guests can visit the parade’s beautiful Fjord horses and ride the Nordic Express kid train outside. Ballard favorite ice cream shop Parfait will have its ice cream truck on site from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and a percentage of each sale will be donated to the Museum.
Visitors may also tour all the galleries and exhibitions currently on view at the Museum. This includes the brand new visiting exhibition Danish Modern: Design for Living, which features the unique furnishing designed and made in Denmark during the 1950s and 1960s. Dozens of vintage pieces from the period will be on display by designers such as Paoul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Niels Otto Møller, Borge Mogensen, and Hans Wegner.
In addition to events at the Museum itself, the Nordic Heritage Museum will sell 17th of May t-shirts, totes, flags, and more at the Market Arms (2401 NW Market St, Seattle, WA 98107), from 3:00 p.m. until the start of the Syttende Mai parade at 6:00 p.m.
The celebration continues after the parade with the Syttende Mai After-Party, starting at 8:30 p.m.at Anthony’s HomePort on Shilshole Bay. The party features delicious food, aquavit, and a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Norwegian Constitution Day. This event is co-hosted by the Royal Norwegian Consulate, and sponsored in part by Mustad Autoline and Jackson Remodeling. Tickets are $75 each, and can be purchased through the Museum’s website. Seating is very limited and must be purchased in advance.
“We are truly looking forward to this year’s 17th of May,” said Eric Nelson, CEO of the Nordic Heritage Museum. “With important anniversaries in Norway and here in Seattle, the Museum is honored to offer a full day of activities to celebrate our Norwegian roots with the greater community.”
Whether you are of Norwegian heritage or just Norwegian for a day, come celebrate at the Nordic Heritage Museum on Syttende Mai.
