NORTH – New York's First Nordic Food Festival – ran October 2 – 7, 2013 with several Danish star chefs participating
The Consulate General of Denmark in New York reports that New York City had its first Nordic food festival, NORTH, on October 2 – 7, 2013. The festival launched by the food magazine Honest Cooking, and several Danish star chefs were part of the festival program which included events like Master Classes and exclusive gourmet dinners.
The Danish chefs were strongly represented by former Noma chef Daniel Burns and Noma co-founder Mads Refslund, now both established with restaurants in New York. Former Noma-deputy Matthew Orlando from the newly opened restaurant Amass in Copenhagen and Carl Christian Frederiksen from Aamanns Copenhagen, located in the trendy Tribeca neighborhood of New York, also took part in the festival.
Festival guests could get close to the chefs at a variety of events such as exclusive Master Classes, Cooking Classes and intimate dinners. The festival was a culmination of several years of international success of the Nordic cuisine. Especially in New York modern Scandinavian cuisine has experienced a growing popularity and widespread hype with multiple Nordic restaurants opening – a trend that accelerated after Noma’s three consecutive awards as the world’s best restaurant.
Exciting dinners across the Atlantic
The four Danish chefs all taught and participated in various Master Classes, which also gave access to the Danish-sponsored BoConcept Nordic Taste Lounge with tasting and product samples and drinks from the Nordic countries. It was also possible to meet and talk face-to -face with the great chefs in the lounge.
Carl Christian Frederiksen from Aamanns Copenhagen could also be experienced as a teacher in a special sandwich and pickle cooking class on Sunday, October 6.
One of the festival’s biggest draws was the exclusive dinners that took place in a variety of Nordic restaurants all over New York. The festival’s most prominent dinner took place at the restaurant Luksus in the hip Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn on October 6 and 7. Founder and head chef at Luksus is former Noma-chef Daniel Burns, and he, together with Amass’ Matt Orlando, former Noma-deputy, served food to just 20 guests to the sold-out private dining event.
NORTH’s dinners were arranged so that a local Scandinavian chef served food together with an international Scandinavian chef in a cook off format. For example, Mads Refslund invited Gunnar Gislason from Iceland to his NYC restaurant ACME, while Carl Christian Frederiksen from Aamanns Copenhagen hosted Sasu Laukkonen from Finland.
NORTH was co-sponsored by VisitDenmark, Copenhagen Cooking and FOOD. NORTH ran October 2 – 7 at ICC SoHo, New York, NY. See pictures and more information from the event at http://honestcooking.com/category/north-festival/
