
OBITUARY: In Memory of Ahlmann ‘Al’ Iversen of Oak Lawn, Illinois, 1930 – 2015
A longtime friend of The Danish Pioneer Newspaper, the Steffensen Family and the entire Danish-American community in the Chicago area and around the USA, Al Iversen, has passed away on July 14, 2015. In addition to founding Iversen’s Bakery in Blue Island, Illinois, Al was former Chicago Midwest Rebild Chapter President, former President of the Rebild Chapter Presidents, and he chaired the U.S. Rebild Nominating Committee for many years. Al was Past President of The Danish Home of Chicago and involved in many other organizations. All Honor to Al Iversen’s Memory. The official obituary follows below.
In Memory of Al Iversen, 1930 – 2015
Ahlmann “Al” Iversen, 84, beloved husband of 61 wonderful years to wife Herta, loving father of Alan (Daria) and Chris (Monica), adored FarFar of six grandchildren, Eric (Jena), Chelsea, Alyx (Erick), Jessica, Laura, and Kirsten, brother to the late Sveng Aag, sisters Inge and Edith. Born on the Danish island of Fyn in 1930, emigrated to the U.S. in 1951, with his new wife opened their first bakery in 1955, founded Iversen’s Bakery, Blue Island, IL in 1959, was active in Retail Bakers of America, the Danish Brotherhood Lodge #35, the Danish-American friendship organization “Rebild National Park Society”, the Danish Home in Chicago, IL, and at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School. His contributions to many Danish-American causes were graciously recognized when he was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark into the Ridder of Dannebrog (Knight of Dannebrog) Order in 2008. He was a loyal Cubs fan and Bears fan and was an avid reader. Visitation Saturday, July 18, 2015; 9 – 11 am with a Funeral Service to follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4660 West 94th St., Oak Lawn, IL 60453. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Danish Home, 5656 N. Newcastle Ave., Chicago, IL 60631.
