OBITUARY: In Memory of Walter H. Anthonsen, 1931 – 2014, longtime Scandinavian Park leader in South Elgin, Illinois
Walter H. Anthonsen, 83, passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 28, 2014, at Carle Hospital in Champaign, Illinois. Though originally from Chicago, Walter had made his home in Loda, IL and in more recent years lived at the Heartland Nursing Home in Paxton, IL.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Paxton, IL evcov@conxxus.com. The Rev. Craig Pinley will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Carle Center for Philanthropy in Urbana or Scandinavian Park, Inc. N.F.P. Please feel free to share a memory of Walter at the website knappfuneralhomes.com.
Walter Anthonsen was born on April 9, 1931 in Chicago, the son of Hermod Anthonsen from Denmark and Kristina Abrahamsson from Sweden. He is survived by May Anthonsen (mother of his children) and Marion Varney (sister), and his children Linda Anthonsen, David(Annette) Anthonsen, Judy (Jim) Wilson, his grandchildren, Sarah (Ernie) Shore, Daniel Wilson, Meagan (Kyle) Gogoel and his great-grandson Eli Shore.
Though retired, he maintained an active interest in his passions for woodwork, dancing, ceramics, reading and a deep appreciation for his membership with the Evangelical Covenant Church, 260 S. Union Street, Paxton, IL 60957.
Walt’s long held desire to keep the Scandinavian culture alive, especially for the younger generations, was expressed through the founding and his long term leadership with the Scandinavian Day Festival Committee of Scandinavian Park, Inc. N.F.P. at the Vasa Park located in South Elgin, Illinois (www.vasaparkil.com and www.scandinaviandayil.com). A memorial service will be held at Vasa Park in the spring, date to be determined.
