Santa Lucia is celebrated on December 13th in Sweden. In the former Gregorian calendar this was the shortest day of the year, very apropos as it is a celebration of light and dark. Lucia was blinded for her faith, thus she wears a red sash as a symbol of her martyrdom the oldest girl in the family dons a wreath of candles around her head and carries Lucia (saffron) buns to represent the sun.  She is followed by girls and boys dressed as star boys, bakers and a shepherd.  The children will sing in Swedish with a Lucia procession.
