Scandinavia House in New York City presents Winter 2014-15 season of programs and more

ScanHouseLogo-HeaderThe American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) has lined up an exciting and engaging Winter 2014-15 season of programs at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America, including exhibitions, films, concerts, and other public programs.

Exhibitions are among the major highlights of the upcoming season, including Voyage to the Virtual, the first Scandinavia House exhibition dedicated to the digital, moving image, and light-based Nordic art. Opening Saturday, January 24, 2015, Voyage to the Virtual combines video, animation, sculpture, light, and interactive media, inviting viewers on expeditions to the far north, travelling through time and space, and perceptual journeys into the realm of the virtual.

Curated by Pari Stave and organized by the Katonah Museum of Art, ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place, remains open until Saturday, January 10, 2015 and focuses on the rich and complex relationship of contemporary Icelandic artists to the singular geography of their country. Featuring 11 of Iceland’s leading contemporary artists whose works cover a broad range of formal approaches and media, including painting, photography, sculpture, site-specific wall drawings, and video installations.

Next up in Scandinavia House’s selection of films, The Cliff – Depth of Darkness/Hraunið, a new crime mini-series from Iceland, screens over two weeks beginning December 3, 2014. Special screenings of Norwegian director Erik Skjoldbjærg’s conspiracy thriller Pioneer/Pionér and Ruben Östlund’s psychodrama Force Majeure/Turist are slated for early December 2014 and mid-January 2015. The roster of films for New Nordic Cinema will be announced in early 2015.

Other noteworthy programs include book talks with curator and veteran design entrepreneur Murray Moss on legendary Danish design house Georg Jensen; ballet historian and dance journalist Erik Aschengreen on Danish ballet master and choreographer August Bournonville; and Yale University Professor Anders Winroth on the complex society and culture of the Vikings.

Later this winter, the one-woman play Flagstad – Triumph and Tragedy presents an intimate portrait of the world famous Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad and H.E. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, joins his friend and Music on Park Avenue artistic director Per Tengstrand to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dag Hammarskjöld, former Secretary General of the United Nations in an evening of music inspired by readings from Hammarskjöld’s Markings.

New installments of longstanding kids and family series favorites include Saturday Morning Storytelling with the Hans Christian Andersen Storytellers and Scandinavian Sing-Along.

In Transform! Where Tradition meets Tomorrow – Voyage to the Virtual-related workshops with art educators – children will devise ways to represent the ideas behind the video and multimedia works on view in the exhibition using traditional materials and techniques found in printmaking, painting, and collage.
