Scandinavian American Theater Company celebrates 5th Anniversary at THE COPENHAGEN in New York City
SATC marked special event on Sunday, May 4th, 2014 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
by Kirsten Vibe Philippides, The Danish Pioneer Newspaper’s New York Local Editor
THE COPENHAGEN (formerly Aamanns Copenhagen), the Danish restaurant at 13 Laight Street (near the Tribeca Film Festival in New York), was the ideal casual venue for this festive birthday party hosted by the team who runs the young and vital Scandinavian American Theater Company (SATC).
The founder, Danish actor Albert Bendix, bid a warm and heartfelt welcome to friends and guests who had showed up to celebrate and he expressed with his usual winning enthusiasm and bright smile his appreciation and gratitude that SATC has now reached this first important milestone and his thanks to the audience for showing up to help the team to celebrate.
Zenia Chrysostomidis, Consul for Cultural Affairs from the Norwegian Consulate General, was on hand to present her congratulations and to express her acknowledgment of the pioneering work that this organization has done to bring new (and not so new) Nordic playwrights to the public’s attention.
Maiken T. Derno, the Cultural Attache from the Royal Danish Consulate General, chose to celebrate the birthday by reciting a long monologue from Shakespeare, appropriately chosen for the occasion. Maiken has taught at Columbia University and has written several articles on Shakespeare. She singled out the accomplishments of the hardworking team who founded this young and energetic organization.
Many well wishers, both playwrights, actors and artists who have been or still are connected to SATC but unable to physically be there were able to express their congratulations from abroad by video projected on a television screen.
The champagne was flowing while the entertainment took place.
First on board was Louise Kendra Lohmann, Danish singer and songwriter. Her artist name is Kendra Lou and she has the distinction of being chosen as the Danish recipient of the American Scandinavian Society’s 2014 cultural grant. It is a well deserved honor as her music, vocal jazz is both well composed and beautifully executed . Great talent!
Next in line was Anette Norgaard, Danish singer, song writer, actress and producer. She is equally talented and her voice is beautiful. She is a graduate of the Danish Academy of Musical Teater and the Wilhelm Esper Studio. She is ambitious and driven and her songs were received with great enthusiasm and applause from the audience.
The last musical talent was Kjersti Kveli, Norwegian Folk Singer who accompanied herself on guitar. Kjersti lives here in New York City and performs in this town as well as in Norway.
All three musicians entertained the appreciative audience with great talent, soul filled music, professionally presented and the audience was highly appreciative.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SATC and much more to come!
