Scandinavian music programs scheduled at Swedish American Museum of Chicago

Swedish fiddle duo to perform at Museum –

Toes are tapping in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood in anticipation of a Scandinavian fiddle concert that will be presented at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 18, in the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60640.

The performers, Andrea Larson and Lydia Levins, are completing a Midwest tour in which they have shared new techniques they learned during a year of intensive study at the Eric Sahlstrom Institute in Sweden.

Larson, who has played traditional Swedish fiddle music for 20 years, also teaches the craft in her New England studio. Levins, a five-string fiddler for the past decade, recently received a bronze Zorn medal in Sweden for her Uppland style. She also plays the nickelharpa.

Together the duo provides an energetic and engaging variety of works – including waltzes, schottishes and polskas – that focus on their fiddling and vocal talents. The repertoire is mostly central Swedish with some Norwegian and Danish tunes.

Admission to the program is $15 for Museum members, $20 for non-members, and $10 for children under age 12. Swedish pancakes and soup are included. Register at www.SwedishAmericanMuseum.org.

Choirs offer gospel music of two countries

A pair of choral groups will join in a concert of gospel-style music of the United States and Sweden at 7 p.m. Friday, October 17, in the Swedish American Museum. The suggested donation of $10 per person includes the performances, as well as pizza and salad.

The Maria Choir (Mariakoren) from Lulea in northern Sweden performs a repertoire of Swedish sacral and folk songs, most of which have been composed and arranged by founder and director Lennart Johansson.

The Chicago-based Oakdale Christian Academy Choir, which recently toured in Sweden, is a group of students led by director Terrance J. Smith. They performed in the Museum last May.
