Popular Annual Song Contest Celebrates European Pop Music

Before American Idol, there was the Eurovision Song Contest. Since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has been one of Europe’s most popular television programs and one of television’s longest running music shows.

After more than five decades featuring over 1,100 songs, the contest has become a modern classic with an estimated 125 million viewers watching each year, making it one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world. Featuring kitschy costumes and every style of music—love it or hate it—the contest represents a broad cross section of European popular culture unmatched by any other event.

From Denmark, among the past winners have been Emmelie de Forest in 2013, the Olsen Brothers in 2000 and Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann in 1963.

This year’s entry from Denmark was the band “Anti Social Media”. According to Eurovision TV, over 2 million viewers watched the moment when the band won Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2015, the Danish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. As a result of their victory, the band represented Denmark at this year’s contest in Vienna, Austria. Anti Social Media is a pop/rock band inspired by the warm sounds of the 60’s. Their mission is to revive the simple and happy spirits of bands such as The Beatles, which leads to an all new combination of the old and the modern.
