Two-day workshop in Elk Horn, Iowa offers introduction to Danish culture
A Danish Vacation Close to Home
Workshop with visiting Danish instructor to be held in Elk Horn, Iowa July 25-26, 2014
The Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn is offering a workshop in July that will immerse participants in an introduction to Danish culture–including language, history, food, and film.
The two-day workshop will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014 and will conclude at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. A detailed “itinerary” can be found at danishmuseum.org. Registration is required before the workshop to Tova Brandt at curator@danishmuseum.org or (712) 764-7001. The cost for the workshop is $50 for Museum of Danish America members and $75 for non-members.
The guide for the workshop is Wendy Rahbek Thomsen, a language instructor who is visiting the area from Denmark. Thomsen lives in a thatched house near the sea in the countryside near Copenhagen and likes to sail in her leisure time.
JULY BROWN BAG LUNCH
Thomsen will be the presenter at the July 24 Brown Bag Lunch program titled “A Glimpse of Maritime Denmark.” The program will begin at noon and is free and open to the public.
DINNER AND A MOVIE
The Oscar-nominated film “A Royal Affair” will be shown at Danish Countryside Vines and Wines on the evening of Friday, July 25. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the film at 7:30 p.m.
“A Royal Affair” is described as a gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in their pursuit of freedom for the people, but above all, it is the story of a passionate and forbidden romance that changed an entire nation. The film will be shown in Danish with English subtitles and is rated R. Running time is 132 minutes.
Cost is $20 for the dinner and film. The dinner and film are included with the “Denmark without a Passport” workshop. Reservations are required to Tova Brandt by July 22.
More information about these events can be found at danishmuseum.org.
