University of Southern Denmark Chamber Choir performing in New York on January 17 and 18

On Saturday, January 17, 2015, The University of Southern Denmark Chamber Choir, conducted by Saul Zaks, will be performing at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, which is located at the corners of Ovington Avenues and Fourth. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and will run for approximately 60 minutes. The cost is $15.
The Danish ensemble, which is an Odense-based mixed choir consisting of 20 singers from the University of Southern Denmark and from the island of Funen (Fyn), will embark on a weeklong tour of New York during the third week of January. Its repertoire spans a multitude of languages and styles, from Argentinean folk songs to sacred music in Hebrew. However, the choir’s main focus is Scandinavian music which is delivered with a trademark lyrical touch. In particular, the chamber choir specializes in the works of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, this year celebrating his 150th birthday.
On Sunday, January 18th, the Danes’ visit to New York will culminate in a special once-in-a-lifetime performance at Carnegie Hall – the first time ever a Danish choir has been invited to perform at this world-famous venue. Along with a number of other international choirs, the Danish university choir will take part in the US premiere of Misa Tango, a tango mass for mezzo-soprano, mixed choir, bandoneon, piano and string orchestra. The orchestral ensemble has been hand-picked for the occasion by the Argentinean composer of the piece, Martin Palmeri.
The University of Southern Denmark Chamber Choir’s New York tour is funded by the Carl Nielsen & Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Foundation and by the Foundation Jochum.
The Scandinavian East Coast Museum is so appreciative of the choir and its Director Saul Zaks for reaching out to the museum. Carnegie Hall is coming to Bay Ridge. This is something you will not want to miss.
