VisitDenmark: Copenhagen sets a new Michelin record in 2014

According to VisitDenmark, Copenhagen has won 17 Michelin stars for 15 of its restaurants in Guide Michelin’s new ‘Main Cities of Europe’ 2014. This is more than last year, when the Danish capital won 15 stars, and now everyone’s eyes are on the high potential for a Nordic guide focusing on Denmark and its Nordic neighbors in 2015.

Guide Michelin’s ‘Main Cities of Europe 2014’ guide was recently announced, awarding its coveted stars to restaurants in a number of European capitals. Once again, Copenhagen has set a new record with 17 Michelin stars divided among 15 restaurants in and around the capital – compared to 15 stars to 13 restaurants last year. As well as the prestigious stars, Copenhagen has been awarded 12 Bib Gourmands, given to good restaurants with affordable prices.

As well as beating its own record from 2013, Copenhagen is therefore once again well ahead of the other Scandinavian capitals this year, maintaining its position as the Nordic region’s gastronomic capital.

Nordic cuisine in the spotlight

The other major news this year is the high potential for a new Nordic Michelin guide in 2015, dedicated to Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries. Previously, the Michelin guide has not awarded stars to restaurants in Scandinavian cities with fewer than 500,000 residents, but that could all change next year with a potential ‘Michelin Guide Nordic’, which could include restaurants in smaller cities.

A major gastro-year ahead in Copenhagen and Aarhus

The new Michelin stars and guides augment an already packed gastro calendar in the Danish capital. The Copenhagen Cooking food festival, which is the largest of its kind in Northern Europe, celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer and its organizers are delighted with the many stars that now shine on Copenhagen’s restaurant scene. As are the initiators of the newcomer culinary festival FOOD Festival taking place for the third time in 2014 in Denmark’s second largest city of Aarhus. Both food festivals are busy planning the programs for this year’s ambitious food festivals and are delighted that the Guide Michelin 2014 has re-confirmed Denmark’s strong position as a gastronomic frontrunner and a ‘must go’ destination for foodie lovers worldwide.
