What vendors will be at Julmarknad, Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar, in Chicago?

Julmarknad bazaar set at Swedish Museum in Andersonville on December 6 and 7, 2014 –

Vendors of Scandinavian food and merchandise will market their wares during the Swedish American Museum’s upcoming Julmarknad, a traditional Christmas bazaar. A vast array of items will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, at 5211 N. Clark Street, Chicago.

The annual event includes displays by 20 vendors and performances by musicians, singers and dancers. A preview sale will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, December 5, during Late Night Andersonville.

The Kerstin Andersson Museum Store heads the roster of Julmarknad vendors, offering special discounts on Scandinavian Christmas items plus holiday treats of glögg and pepparkakor.

Bazaar participants include Wikstrom’s Specialty Foods, John Berquist’s woven forest greens, Merrilyn Shoemaker’s stained glass art, Sidonka Wadina’s Amber Weaves of Grain, Nancy Wenstrand’s embroidered clothing and toys, Lauralee Carlson-Reese’s handcrafted ornaments, Just Pots container gardening, Sweedie Kids hats and bibs, and Swedish Passport embroidered garments.

Among others are Simply Scandinavian gifts and antiques, Lovisa Tedestedt’s scarves, Aronson Graphic Design ornaments and trolls, Joan Soderberg’s rosemaling, Elizabeth Ahlem’s works on paper, Ronald Clayton’s mid-century Dansk teak items, Soap Sisters decorative soaps, Ron Odegaard’s wood turnings, and Marcia Schori’s handmade jewelry.

Performers on Saturday include the Merula Choir at 11:30 a.m., Swedish dance instruction by Linda and Paul at 12:30 p.m., the Chicago Swedish Male Chorus at 1:30 p.m., and folk songs by John Berquist with Linda and Paul at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday performances start at 1 p.m. with a Lucia Procession by Svenska Skolan, then Nordic Folk Dancers at 1:30 p.m., Nordic Voices of Chicago at 2:15 p.m., and Chicago Spelmanslag with John Berquist at 3 p.m.

Immigrants’ letters displayed in library

The Swedish American Museum’s collection of hundreds of letters to and from immigrants in Chicago and other Midwestern communities will be available for study throughout December in the third floor library.

The personal letters, in both Swedish and English, represent detailed accounts of the experiences of individuals who had left their homeland in hopes of finding better ways of life. They are dated between the 1880s and 1970s.

The Swedish Council of America has provided support for the evaluation and archival of letters that were donated to the Museum.

Activities abound on December schedule:

Saturday and Sunday, December 13-14, 9 a.m.: Breakfast with Tomten with Swedish pancakes and dancing around the tree.

Saturday, December 13, 4:45 p.m.: St. Lucia celebration begins with procession from the Museum and continues at 7 p.m. with holiday songs and readings at Ebenezer Lutheran Church.

Sunday, December 14, 1 p.m.: Scandinavian Jam with Mary Allsop and Paul Tyler; instructions begin at 1 p.m., jam session at 2 p.m.; participants are encouraged to bring instruments.

Friday, December 19, 11 a.m.: Hejsan children’s story and craft hour based on “The Wild Christmas Reindeer” by Jan Brett.

Friday, December 19, 6 to 10 p.m.: Late-er Night Andersonville, four more hours of discounts, entertainment and pictures with Santa.

Sunday, December 21, 4 p.m.: Svensk Julgudstjanst, a Christmas service at Ebenezer Lutheran Church conducted in Swedish.

Sunday, December 21, 5 p.m.: Old Fashioned Swedish Family Christmas Smörgåsbord Dinner with presents from Tomtem for children, Lucia procession and dancing around the tree; catered by Tre Kronor Restaurant.

The Museum will be closed December 24, 25 and 31, plus January 1.

Holiday hours December 1 through 21, 2014:

Museum and Store: Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Friday – Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Children’s Museum: Monday – Thursday, 1-4 p.m.; Friday – Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Hours December 22 through 30, 2014:

Museum, Store, and Children’s Museum: Monday – Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday – Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
