WINTERFROST: Free Event in Illinois with a Book Rooted in Danish Tradition!

Join us on Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 at 1 PM at The Book Stall (811 Elm Street in Winnetka, Illinois, Phone 847-446-8880, www.thebookstall.com) for a visit with author Michelle Houts, reading from and discussing her new novel, WINTERFROST.

Winterfrost is a tale the School Library Journal calls, “A gentle holiday adventure with a quiet message of courage and responsibility.”

When 12-year-old Bettina is unexpected placed in charge of the family farm (and her baby sister) she has to contend with the nisse, mischievous creatures upset when they don’t receive their expected Christmas treat.

This book is recommended for kids ages 8-12, and the event is free and open to the public.

Publisher’s Summary: An ordinary Danish Christmas turns extraordinary when a family overlooks an important folkloric tradition. Christmas has come, and with it a sparkling white winterfrost over the countryside. But 12-year-old Bettina’s parents have been called away unexpectedly, leaving her in charge of the house, the farm, and baby Pia. In all the confusion, Bettina’s family neglects to set out the traditional bowl of Christmas rice pudding for the tiny nisse who are rumored to look after the family and their livestock. No one besides her grandfather ever believed the nisse were real, so what harm could there be in forgetting this silly custom? But when baby Pia disappears during a nap, the magic of the nisse makes itself known. To find her sister and set things right, Bettina must venture into the miniature world of these usually helpful, but sometimes mischievous folk. A delightful winter adventure for lovers of the legendary and miraculous.

Biography: Michelle Houts lives on a family farm in West Central Ohio with her three children, the farmer of her dreams, some cattle, a few hogs, a whole lot of barn cats, a few goats and a Great Pyrenees named Hercules.
