Women's Auxiliary of The Danish Home of Chicago to be honored with 'Essence Award' at The Danish Home Foundation Benefit Luncheon at Cantigny Park on September 22, 2013

The Women’s Auxiliary of The Danish Home of Chicago will be presented with the “Essence Award” at The Danish Home Foundation Benefit Luncheon to be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton, IL 60189. Long-time Danish Home volunteers Jimmy and Esther Sorensen of Wood Dale, Illinois were the first recipients of the “Essence Award” in 2012 during the Benefit Luncheon at Brookfield Zoo.

The Danish Home of Chicago Foundation invites members and friends to celebrate the 2013 annual benefit event at Cantigny Park, which is entitled “A Salute to Freedom” and will start at 11 a.m. with a Danish Royal Guard welcome. The Danish Home Foundation is proud to honor the American and Danish militaries whose vigil has allowed us to maintain the cultures we so love.

During the event, a magician will also be on hand to entertain the family and there will be time to sign up for the McCormick House Tour. Participants will have the opportunity to explore Cantigny’s lush gardens, the 1st Division Military Museum and the elegance of General McCormick’s home.

A delicious buffet brunch will be served at 12 noon. The Essence Award will be presented to the Women’s Auxiliary of The Danish Home at 1 p.m. and a Civil War Re-enactor will portray how Scandinavians influenced the Civil War at 1:20 p.m..

At 1:45 p.m., last year’s popular “Heads and Tails” is included in the fun for a chance to win a new iPad. The park closes at 5 p.m., so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the day.

The Danish Home Foundation was established in 2012 to manage the growth of the organization and benevolent care of residents. For 122 years, The Danish Home’s practice to subsidize those who have exhausted their financial resources has been maintained. This annual benefit event is an important means of raising philanthropic funds to allow older adults who have outlived their financial resources to remain at The Danish Home of Chicago. Participation and support of The Danish Home Foundation allows The Danish Home to continue to care for the elderly and to develop meaningful programs and services for other older adults. Today, while The Danish Home remains open first and primarily to Danish and Scandinavian people, people of all backgrounds are welcomed. The single requirement is that people are compatible and appreciate the Danish traditions.

This year’s honoree of the “Essence Award”, the Women’s Auxiliary of Chicago, was founded in 1958 and assists in the social well-being of the residents of The Danish Home of Chicago. The board of directors and members of the Women’s Auxiliary work hard to help to improve the quality of life of The Danish Home residents and the organization hosts many benefit events throughout the year, ranging from its Spring Luncheon & Salad Luncheon to its Fall Brunch/Membership Meeting.
